"That which is Below corresponds to that which is Above, and that which is Above corresponds to that which is Below, to accomplish the miracle of the One Thing." --The Emerald Tablet of Hermes Trismegistus.
The first thing that I wish to say today is that the World is always in "balance". ALWAYS. Even when it does not seem like it, even when it looks like it's "falling apart", even when it seems sad or confusing. It is the very nature of the Universe to be PERFECT. It is we who do not perceive it to be so.
That said, this does not negate any sense of grief at what we perceive to be tragedies in this world. We have every right to feel anything that we are feeling. Pissed, sad, bewildered, closed down, etc.
Some have already tried to explain recent World events with astrology. I thought that astrologer Armand Diaz of Integral Astrology said it well, "...the astrological aspects are neutral - what we do with them is up to us, and such tragedies are the result of human rather than celestial activity.".
I'd also like to respectfully point out that there has been ongoing violence all over the world, and in particular in the Middle East. To try to use astrology to specifically focus on the incident that happened in France could be seen as myopic and Western centric. Why should this incident be expected to have a major astrological configuration to explain it, when these things have been happening to many people in many places? Again, I am not taking away from the gravity of the tragedy in Paris. Having many dear friends and having had precious experiences in Paris, Friday's events have effected me in personal ways.
Saturn in Sag in its square with Neptune may be doing exactly what it is "supposed" to be doing: challenging us to open our minds more broadly and to see from different perspectives. What assumptions about the world need to be inquired into, felt into, and possibly released? What rigid beliefs could be washed away? What does "unity" mean if many are not seen or included in our understanding of that? Open or closed (and when is which appropriate?)
It is human to want to blame, wipe out "evil", be on the side of "good", want to "understand" (or conversely, to insist that we can't possibly "understand"). But I ask us to be careful about what we call "good" and what we call "evil". Question what it is that you really know to be true. When we're confused, we often want to be sure about something, even when we're really not. Research, travel, have discourse, connect, question the media you ingest, learn.
The Serpent energy that was released at the Scorpio New Moon is neutral. It does not differentiate between "good" and "evil". It just IS. The venom of the Snake can be used to harm or heal. It's our choice what we wish to do with that. But it was venom that was released, and as such it brings into consciousness what is wounded and/or poisoned, and what needs medicine. It brings up Shadow, and with it, unconscious belief. Serpent energy is often projected upon as "evil" and scapegoated (think Lilith, Satan, Garden of Eden), but it is necessary for transformation and initiation into the next phase. It is the rising of it, out of the tribally-oriented lower chakras toward the Higher Mind, that brings Enlightenment.
The only thing that we have real power over is ourselves. Each of us is the microcosm of the macrocosm. What we believe about the world outside is a mirror for what we believe about ourselves. Perhaps the most important way that we can manage what is happening in the world is to manage what is going on within ourselves.
